"A career of a lifetime, right down the drain"- Dusty Rhodes
NBA superstar Lebron James announced to the world last night that he would be joining the Miami Heat organization. This came as a surprise to the fans of the NBA, Cleavland residents, and even myself (even though I have never been that big on the man in the first place). The thing is, this isn’t that big of a deal. Fourteen years ago and less than 300 miles away from Miami one of the biggest betrayals in American history happened. One that left children like scared for life, an organization shattered, and a nation torn. The incident was when Hulk Hogan turned Heel.
Hulk Hogan was a wrestling legend for a decade. I don't know any US born citizen 22 & up that would disagree with that statement. I mean every kid wanted to “say their prayers, eat their vitamins, and be a real American” growing up. That was until in 1996, at the Bash-at-the-Beach Pay-Per-View in Daytona Beach, Florida. Where Hogan came out to a crowd of ecstatic fans in during the WCW’s greatest crisis ever and surprised us all by doing his famous finishing Leg drop on Macho Man Randy Savage. Then letting the world know that he had aligned himself with Kevin Nash and Scott Hall(of the Outsiders) and delivering a shocking blow to fans and the organization that had stood by him for years.
Enter “Bron, Bron” the man who was supposed to bring a championship home to the Cleveland Cavaliers. After a finals loss, and a back-to-back exits out the playoffs. Lebron had enough. He had a hugely billed ESPN hour-long prime time special, to announce to the world that he had joined his two buddies in Miami. Leaving his hometown, organization and everyone else shocked, and disappointed.
Though Bron has shocked the world. He is still a step behind Hogan. He didn’t capitalize in on a PPV, nor was he littered by fans at the press conference. Your 14 years late buddy. Keep trying to be cool with your homeys, Dwayne Wade, Chris Bosh, Jay-Z, and Drake my friend. You are a fraud, and will never be able to upstage “The Hulkster” no matter how hard you try.
